BlueLeaf Gallery is pleased to present ‘Artist’s Choice’, an exhibition of work by four artists, Leonard Sexton,
Gerard McGourty, Andrew Hood and Dan Parry-Jones and their chosen artists: Brian Nealon, Garance Monfort,
Karen Edwards and Vera Boele-Keimer.
The format of an artist choice exhibition provides a valuable means for artists to voice their perspectives on artistic
processes or outcomes that they view as significant. In addition to enabling curator-artists to visually articulate
viewpoints about current practices that deserve examination, the format provides a context for audiences to better
understand the curating artists’ ideologies and work.
A curating-artist’s selection may sometimes reflect an affinity for another artist’s work – processes and focuses
that may be complimentary to his or her own practice. Other curating-artists may address their selection
on the basis of an admiration of methods employed by another artist or concerns embodied in the work which
may be very distant from their own.
Gerard McGourty’s practice references past and current experiences and observations in Ireland and from periods
in France and Italy. McGourty draws from his conscious and subconscious memory to address rituals and activities,
locations and characters from his native County Fermanagh and surrounding counties. His process shifts between
intense spontaneous responses and methodically controlled outcomes. Narratives are obscured amidst rigorously
applied pigment, decisive gestural marks, intentionally distorted perspectives and cryptic iconography.
Gerard McGourty lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. His work has been exhibited in London, Paris, Edinburgh,
the U.S.A. and Ireland and at international art fairs. His work is held in collections worldwide.
Gerard McGourty invites Garance Monfort to Artist’s Choice. Garance Monfort lives and works
in Cherbourg, France.
“What I found interesting about her work is what I would call her attempt to make sense of the world
as she finds it. Also I like the immediate impact, not trying to be intellectual or complex. This to me is refreshing ,
in view of the tendency to pretension or falseness, in some contemporary art.”
